Valley’s religious turns to faith without framework as virus ravages

July 23, 2020

During times of turmoil, many people turn to their respective places of worship for comfort and guidance.

With COVID-19 ravaging much of the Rio Grande Valley and new orders reissued to mitigate the disease’s spread as hundreds more are infected and dozens die daily, many local faith leaders are faced with something of a conundrum: how to provide hope during what many feel is a hopeless time.

For the Valley’s spiritual leaders, the answer lies in social media.

July 16, 2020

An interfaith coalition is pressing the world’s largest brewer to remove the name of a Hindu god from a popular beer that dates to the late 1800s — a dispute the beermaker insists is a case of mistaken identity.

The group, which includes representatives of the Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu and Jain religions, is calling on Belgium-based brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV to rename its Brahma line, a favorite in Brazil.

Claims of Anti-Hindu Bias in California Schools Debated at Ninth Circuit

July 15, 2020

During oral arguments before a Ninth Circuit panel Tuesday, Senior U.S. Circuit Judge Mary Schroeder asked how the court can review a curriculum decision given the Ninth Circuit’s 1998 ruling in Monteiro v. The Tempe Union School District, which found a school district cannot be sued for making students read Mark Twain’s classic, “The Adventures of...

Near Boston, a Friendly’s-turned-Hindu temple serves holy offerings to go

June 4, 2020

When Keshav Kishor Sharan’s Hindu community bought a retired Friendly’s restaurant for the community’s new temple, the group renovated the building completely, replacing every fixture and window.

Every window, that is, except for the ice cream takeout window.

Sharan’s fellow Hindus in Holbrook, Massachusetts, south of Boston, ended up preserving the pass-through as a piece of the building’s past life, an outpost of New England’s iconic burger-and-a-sundae chain. Plus, Sharan said, “we thought it looked cute, having that little ice cream window.”

Virus lockdown changes how Hindus celebrate holy period

April 3, 2020

Rukmani Sharma fears the virus that has turned the world upside down. But as a devout Hindu, she also fears for her soul.

But on Thursday evening (March 5) in Harvard Yard, when students arrived at the steps of Memorial Church to mark the festival, they were dressed in black, shouting “Azaadi!” — freedom — while holding slogans such as "No one is illegal," "Boycott NRC," and "Stop genocide in India!”

The event is part of a nationwide campaign called ...
