    January 4, 2023

Sunday morning inside Faith Christian Church in Dorchester, and Pastor Brenda White is preaching to her flock.

To help everyone focus on matters of faith, her church has partnered with the state to boost its security -- one of about 300 non-profit and faith based organizations across that state that have tapped into $13.9 million in state and federal grants over the last five years.

"Are you worried about violence coming into this church?" 5 Investigates' Mike Beaudet asked.

How one Yakama Nation fisherman inherited the fight for salmon

    January 5, 2023

The salmon were late and the nets were empty.

Two weeks had passed since the Yakama Nation opened its ceremonial and subsistence spring fishing season on the Columbia River. Randy Settler and Sam George had spent $400 on gas for their boats, and had just two fish so far to give to their tribe for ceremonies.

This year’s salmon fishing was forecast to be better than last year’s. But it was the slowest start to a season that Settler could remember. It was also his first season without his mother, Mary Goudy-Settler, who died in October 2021.

Trump-DeSantis Showdown Could Supercharge Latino Evangelicals' Influence

    January 3, 2023

Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida hasn’t announced he’s running for president yet. But among the right-leaning voting blocs that are pulling for him to enter the 2024 primary field are some of his biggest fans: Hispanic evangelical Christians.

It’s not that they’re opposed to the one Republican who has already declared himself a candidate, former President Donald J. Trump. But a showdown between the two titans of the right wing could turn Latino evangelicals into a decisive swing vote in Florida — supercharging their influence and focusing enormous national attention on their...

    January 11, 2023

After Alabama’s GOP cast a vote of no confidence in Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel, her leading opponent, Harmeet Dhillon, decided Monday to address questions about her Sikh faith.

“I would like to take a minute to address concerns that have been raised by a small handful of Alabama Republican Party activists regarding my faith and how that would impact my ability to champion our nation’s Judeo-Christian values that are encapsulated in our Party Platform,” Dhillon said in a mass email to Alabama’s Republican Party steering committee...

    January 9, 2023

A new group that meets at the Tahlequah Public Library offers a safe and supportive place for those practicing paganism.

Brandi Huffman, who organized the meetings, said she and the other attendees just needed a space to connect.

"Witches of all times have had covens, groups, and meetings and things that they do together. I had been wanting to do this for a long time, and it just happened one day," said Huffman. "I needed something. I needed a way to connect with people who felt the same way that I do."

US bishops' rifts unlikely to ease after Benedict's death

    January 4, 2023

Many of the conservative prelates who dominate the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops were appointed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. His recent death deprives them of a symbolic figurehead but is unlikely to weaken their collective power or end the culture wars that have divided the USCCB, according to Catholic academics and clergy.

David Gibson, director of Fordham University’s Center on Religion and Culture, noted that conservative-leaning bishops were...

After Lecturer Sues, Hamline University Walks Back Its 'Islamophobic' Comments

    January 17, 2023

Hamline University officials made an about-face on Tuesday in its treatment of a lecturer who showed an image of the Prophet Muhammad in an art history class, walking back one of their most controversial statements — that showing the image was Islamophobic. They also said that respect for Muslim students should not have superseded academic freedom.

University officials changed their stance after the lecturer, who lost her teaching job, sued the small Minnesota school for religious discrimination and defamation.

“Like all organizations, sometimes we misstep,” said a...
